Photo Montages

The past few weeks I've been practicing shooting photo montages for a bigger project I have planned in August.  The collages are inspired by some of David Hockney's work.  Have a look!

Kirk Douglas Theatre - Culver City, CA--  29'' x 25'' about 30 photos

Downtown Culver City,  CA - 60'' x 29'' about 110 photos

Playa Del Rey Beach, CA - about 100 photos

  1. Wow!! Really neat, Todd. I have no idea how you do that, but I love the overall effect. Esp. love the soft colors (beige & blue) of the beach scene. You noted the overall size on the first 2. Are you going to print them? Maybe CC Chamber of Commerce would buy the one of CC. You never know.... keep up the posts - they're cool.

  2. Thanks guys! Yeah, the first 2 montages are pictures of the physical collage I made with 4x6's on a mat board. The beach one is done in Photoshop. I create them in PS to see how they will look before I piece them together by hand. More to come next week!
It would be nice to have it displayed in CC:-) Maybe I will work on my marketing skills this summer.

  4. So you had to actually print out all 110 photos, for instance. Yikes. But, that's cool that you can do it in photoshop first - it must make it easier to manipulate the photos and choose what to print. I'd love to have one of those some day... Xmas? hint, hint. Playa del Rey beach :-)

  5. Nice... it would be sweet if you wrote up a description of montage making (how you took the photos, processing/color matching, etc). It's also interesting... viewing on a laptop display you seem to loose some of the effect vs. view a printed version.

  6. Thanks for your feedback guys! I will do a more in-depth write up of the process next post. I am waiting for this cloudy weather to clear up so I can shoot again at sunset or sunrise. I might try an industrial photomontage next. I'm still playing around with shooting them seeing what works and what doesn't work.

H - I hope to have a Del Mar one done by Xmas. Just let me know in early Dec which one you would like.
