Surfboard Montages!

This summer I spent a lot of my time working on my surfboard montage project. My goal was to put "beachy" photomontages on broken or beat up surfboards and seal them with either plexiglass and/or resin. After a few weeks of testing and experimenting with lots of glues, resins, and various other plastics I found something that worked. I settled on using two types of resin and fiberglass. The montages are made of 40 to 70 4x6's I pieced together.

I am super stoked on these boards, and now I am trying to get the top 3 displayed at shops or galleries. If you have any suggestions please let me know.  If you are interested in a custom montage of your favorite surf spot or beach please email me at: vontetzel@gmail.com

*** Special thanks to Mikey H for donating his old longboard and to Patagonia Cardiff by the Sea who donated 2 boards from their recycle board box. The last board was a retired board of mine.

Urban Landscape Montage

Here is an urban landscape I pieced together in photoshop.  This image consists of about 110 photos.  I shot this using a 50mm lens.  I kept my camera on a tripod, shooting at the same perspective.  I had the white balance set at "auto" and at aperture priority (f-22) to make sure I get different exposures.

You can piece them in "photomerge" or by hand.  I prefer by hand because it gives you more control.  Yeah, it takes longer but I think you can get a better result.

I just got back from Yosemite, where I did a 4 day backpacking/photo trip.  Pictures will be posted shortly.

Photo Montages

The past few weeks I've been practicing shooting photo montages for a bigger project I have planned in August.  The collages are inspired by some of David Hockney's work.  Have a look!

Kirk Douglas Theatre - Culver City, CA--  29'' x 25'' about 30 photos

Downtown Culver City,  CA - 60'' x 29'' about 110 photos

Playa Del Rey Beach, CA - about 100 photos
